Teda Bentona krytyka Reganowskiej koncepcji praw zwierząt

Abstrakt:

Rozwijana od połowy lat siedemdziesiątych XX w. teoria praw zwierząt amerykańskiego filozofa Toma Regana (the rights view) stanowi jedno z ważniejszych osiągnięć współczesnej myśli etycznej poświęconej relacjom człowieka z resztą zwierząt. Jej gruntownie przemyślane, rygorystyczne metodologicznie, w wysokim stopniu spójne wewnętrznie sformułowanie, wraz z autorskim aneksami, które pojawiały się po wydaniu w roku 1983 głównego dzieła Regana, książki The Case for Animal Rights, zaowocowało dużą ilością interesującej krytyki. Uwagi krytyczne pochodzą od przedstawicieli i przedstawicielek różnych tradycji intelektualnych i przynależą tak do obszaru filozofii, jak i socjologii czy polityki. Jednym z krytyków koncepcji Regana jest socjolog Ted Benton, który w książce Natural Relations: Ecology, Animal Rights and Social Justice poddał koncepcję Regana krytyce tak socjologicznej, jak i pojęciowej. Po skrótowym omówieniu charakteru i  podstawowych pojęć Regnowskiej teorii, tekst wyjaśnia kilka głównych aspektów krytyki Bentona i podaje przykłady możliwej obrony pozycji Regana. Bada wzajemne relacje pomiędzy teorią moralną Regana, a działaniem politycznym.

TED BENTON`S CRITIQUE OF REGAN`S ANIMAL RIGHTS CONCEPT

Abstract:

The animal right theory, which has been created by the American philosopher Tom Regan and developed since the middle of the 70s, is one of the most important achievements of modern ethical thought devoted to the relationship between the human being and the rest of animals. Its carefully thought-out, methodological and internally coherent version, along with the notes provided by the author which were added after publishing Regan`s book “The Case for Animal Rights” in 1983, has lead to interesting discussions and critiques. They come from representatives of different intellectual traditions and various disciplines, such as philosophy, sociology as well as political studies. One of them is Ted Benton, a sociologist who in the book “Natural Relations: Ecology, Animal Rights and Social Justice” has submitted Regan`s concept to critical review from the sociological, as well as from the conceptual perspective. After briefly describing the character and basic notions that are present in Regan`s theory, the text explains a number of main aspects of Benton`s critique and provides a number of examples of possible defences of Regan`s stance. The text studies the mutual relations between Regan`s moral theory and a political activity.
